Elle Orlando Vienna Concert reviews
38 Special -March 2013 Tour
It was greatly disappointing that Donnie Van Zant was not at the concert. Let me start by saying, since Donnie is the spirit and leader of the band who brings high energy to Elle Orlando, he was HIGHLY missed. Apparently, he is not touring with the band. The fact that he is still prominently advertised on the website and promo for the tour makes this extremely loyal fan feeling a bit duped and misled. If he is ill and the band was HONEST with the fans, then it would have been much more acceptable. Worst of all, the band did not make one mention of Donnie's absence!!! 38 fans are family and we would understand. I am sure many fans would not purchase tickets if they knew Donnie was not going to be there, but I sure hope this is not the reason for the deception. Don Barnes, Larry Junstrom, Danny Chauncey, Gary Moffatt, and Bobbie Capps were there and played tightly. Apparently from reading other reviews, this has been going on for some time for many shows. I guess I simply expect more from these guys who have built their legacy on being a band that truly appreciates their fans.
The show itself started with Rockin' into the night. Bobby Capps sang Donnie parts on Wild Eyed Southern Boys, Twentieth Century Fox, and a couple others. Songs such as Caught up in You, Back where you belong, If I'd been the one, Like No other night, Somebody Like You were all included. The encore was Chain Lightning, Hold on Loosely, and the Travelin Band finale that is typical. The usual hits medley was also included about midway through the set which approached 90 minutes. Missing big time was "Rebel-to-Rebel", Stone Cold Believer, Take em out, and Donnie's heartfelt connection with the fans. The show played many of the hits - many of which Donnie does not sing - and were solid but uninspired. My only hope is that 38 will communicate honestly and openly about what is going on with Donnie not being with the band!!
